Comprehensive First Aid

This course provides students with the knowledge and skills to manage less common, but severe medical and trauma in emergency situations.

Certification

A Comprehensive First Aid certificate of will be issued on successful completion of this course.

Standard: 6400 L3 C2 V6, 6401 L2 C1 V6, 6402 L1 C1 V8

Course Content

The course focuses on:

  • Chain of survival.
  • Primary patient assessment/DRSABCD.
  • Dangers: scene assessment and hazard management.
  • Response – AVPU shout and tap.
  • Sending for help.
  • Airway, breathing, circulation.
  • Stable side position.
  • Airway obstruction adult/child/infant.
  • Secondary patient assessment.
  • Shock and bleeding.
  • Bones and tissues.
  • Poisoning.
  • Burns including burnt airway.
  • Medical conditions activities.
  • Heat related emergencies.
  • Allergic reactions.
  • Drowning incidents.
  • Head trauma.
  • Major wounds.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Manage first aid in an emergency situation.
  • Provide first aid.
  • Provide basic life support.

Course structure

The course is a combination of theoretical and practical sessions. Students are assessed continuously during the course.

Prerequisites

None.

Assessment process

Practical assessment (including verbal questioning) which takes place when the student is ready/has shown that they can perform all tasks required. The assessment will involve simulated emergency situations covering trauma; a medical injury; and a patient with multiple problems or more than one casualty.

Revalidation/Refresher

To maintain current competency, it is recommended that refresher training occurs regularly. NZQA and Toitū te Waiora identify this as every two years.

  • Photo ID.
  • Comfortable clothing suitable for participating in practical exercises.
  • Appropriate streetwear can be worn.

Coming from a business background, Ryan worked in the offshore industry before moving onshore to pursue a career as a fire and marine trainer. He has Emergency Care, Fire and Rescue qualifications as well as in the areas of Adult Education and Training. Ryan volunteers his time to work with St John Ambulance as an ambulance officer and as a senior fire fighter with Fire Emergency New Zealand.
