Coxswain (Lifeboat)

Course Content

The course focuses on:

• Types of lifeboats and davits.
• Coxswain and crew responsibilities.
• Lifeboat equipment.
• Lifeboat, davit and equipment maintenance.
• Communications.
• Passage planning.
• Safety induction and mustering.
• Boat handling and man overboard.
• Practical.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

• Identify hazards associated with boarding and launching of a marine safety craft.
• Explain uses of onboard marine craft equipment.
• Identify maintenance check requirements for a survival craft.
• Take charge of a survival craft or during and after launching.
• Operate a survival craft including steering by compass.
• Use radio and electronic indicator beacon operations.

Course structure

The course is a combination of theoretical and practical sessions. Students are assessed continuously during the course.

Course prerequisites

Current medical certificate.

Assessment process

Theory assessment followed by practical assessment which takes place when the student is ready/has shown that they can perform all tasks required. The assessment will involve mustering, boarding, launching and handling of a survival craft.

Revalidation/Refresher

To maintain current competency, it is recommended that refresher training occurs regularly. Depending on the industry you work in this may vary. Current industry recommendations are every five years.

• Photo ID.
• Comfortable clothing suitable for participating in practical exercises.
•  Covered-in footwear (Note safety boots are required for entry to Port Taranaki when conducting TEMPSC activity).
• Water bottle
• Swimming attire and towel
