Personal Evacuation Systems

This course provide students with the knowledge and skills to don and use a Personal Evacuation System (PES) in both a dry and wet descent simulated environment.

Certification

A Personal Evacuation Systems certificate will be issued on successful completion of this course.

Course Content

The course focuses on:

  • Knowledge of personal evacuation system components, purpose and usage.
  • Preparation of a PES prior to use including donning of harness and anchor point connection.
  • Safe operation of a PES including descent and use of quick release in a simulated environment.
  • Use of painter line during a descent.
  • Performing one dry and two wet descents.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the components, purpose, and operation of a Personal Evacuation System (PES)
  • Demonstrate safe use of a PES from an offshore platform or in a simulated environment.

Course structure

The course is a combination of theoretical and practical sessions. Students are assessed continuously during the course.

Course prerequisites

None.

Assessment process

Theory assessment followed by practical assessment which takes place when student is ready/has shown that they can perform all tasks required. The assessment will involve the donning and use of a PES unit in a dry and wet descent.

Revalidation/Refresher

To maintain current competency, it is recommended that refresher training occurs regularly. Depending on the industry you work in this may vary. Current manufacturer recommendation is annually.

  • Comfortable clothing suitable for participating in practical exercises.
  • Covered-in footwear.
  • Swimming attire and towel

There isn’t much that Bob can’t drive or operate.  Bob is a MITO, and Connexis registered assessor, a Competenz registered Forklift Trainer and an NZTA approved assessor.  Bob started his career as a Driver/Operator within the Transport and Building Industries and has spent the last 20 years training people on safe driving and operating equipment.  He believes in giving the right information to the candidate so that they can make the right decisions out there in the workplace, that teaching the safe use of heavy machinery includes a strong approach to forming a safety culture at their workplace so that the operator goes home safe every day.

Coming from a business background, Ryan worked in the offshore industry before moving onshore to pursue a career as a fire and marine trainer. He has Emergency Care, Fire and Rescue qualifications as well as in the areas of Adult Education and Training. Ryan volunteers his time to work with St John Ambulance as an ambulance officer and as a senior fire fighter with Fire Emergency New Zealand. Ryan stands out as a well-rounded emergency response professional with experience across multiple areas.
