Endorsement – Wheels, Rollers, Tracks

This course provides the required training to operate a special type Wheeled/Tracked/Roller vehicle and drive safely and legally on a road.

Certification

Students assessed competent in all elements of each of the unit standards will be credited the unit standards and will be awarded a NZTA Licence Endorsement certificate.

Unit Standard: 16701 L3 C3 V4, 16702 L3 C3 V4, 16703 L3 C3 V4

Course Content

The course focuses on:

  • Vehicle types and legal requirements.
  • Environmental factors and reducing risk.
  • Procedures and considerations while operating a Special-type Wheeled/Tracked/Roller vehicle.
  • Pre-start checks.
  • Practical demonstration.
  • Parking and shut down processes.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Describe a special-type tracked, wheeled or roller vehicle.
  • Describe legal requirements relating to driving a special-type vehicle on a road.
  • Describe driving procedures and general considerations for driving a special-type vehicle safely on a road.
  • Demonstrate procedures for driving a special-type vehicle safely and legally on a road.

Course structure

Theoretical assessment involves students demonstrating their knowledge verbally, through group exercises and the completion of a closed-book written assessment. Practical assessment involves demonstration of operator skills using appropriate equipment, which takes approximately 45 minutes per student. Operator’s Safety Manual will be sent out three weeks prior to the training date for students to study and complete exercises.

Course Prerequisites

Some operator experience is essential. Must hold appropriate full NZ Drivers Licence other than a full Class 6.

Assessment process

Theory assessment followed by practical assessment which takes place when student is ready/has shown that they can perform all tasks required. Assessment involves driving in an actual or simulated controlled off-road work environment.

Required equipment:

  • Appropriate machinery will need to be available for the afternoon assessment MUST have appropriate certification.
  • Allocated driving area.

Items to bring

  • Current NZ drivers licence.
  • Correct PPE must be worn including steel-capped safety boots.
  • Comfortable clothing suitable for classroom situation.

There isn’t much that Bob can’t drive or operate.  Bob is a MITO, and Connexis registered assessor, a Competenz registered Forklift Trainer and an NZTA approved assessor.  Bob started his career as a Driver/Operator within the Transport and Building Industries and has spent the last 20 years training people on safe driving and operating equipment.  He believes in giving the right information to the candidate so that they can make the right decisions out there in the workplace, that teaching the safe use of heavy machinery includes a strong approach to forming a safety culture at their workplace so that the operator goes home safe every day.
