F Endorsement (Forklift)

This course enables students to obtain knowledge of the safe operation of a forklift on a roadNZQA Unit Standard 18496 L3 C2 V2 and the legal obligations pertaining to that plant in a place of work. Skills in the completion of pre-operational checks prior to operations, parking and shutting down a forklift will be taught.

Visit the NZTA website for a statutory definition of a road as it not only includes streets and highways, but any place the public has access to including bridges, wharves and road shoulders.

Certification

Students who have met the standards of the assessment process will be awarded US 18496 and a NZTA Certificate. The NZTA certificate is taken to the Automobile Association (AA) or another licensing body for application to student’s Driver Licence card.

The course focuses on:

  • Legal requirements.
  • Driving procedures on road.
  • Environmental factors.
  • Practical on road forklift driving.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Describe legal requirements relating to the driving of a forklift on a road.
  • Describe driving procedures and general considerations for driving a forklift safely on a road.
  • Describe environmental factors affecting safe driving of a forklift on a road.
  • Demonstrate procedures for driving a forklift safely and legally on a road.

Course structure

A combination of theoretical and practical training and closed book assessment.

Course prerequisites

Some operator experience is essential. Must be at least 18 years of age. Must hold appropriate full NZ Drivers Licence other than a full Class 6.

Assessment Process

Theory assessment followed by practical assessment which takes place when student is ready/has shown that they can perform all tasks required. Assessment involves operating a Forklift on a simulated road with and without a load.

  • Covered-in safety footwear.
  • Comfortable clothing suitable for classroom situation.

There isn’t much that Bob can’t drive or operate.  Bob is a MITO, and Connexis registered assessor, a Competenz registered Forklift Trainer and an NZTA approved assessor.  Bob started his career as a Driver/Operator within the Transport and Building Industries and has spent the last 20 years training people on safe driving and operating equipment.  He believes in giving the right information to the candidate so that they can make the right decisions out there in the workplace, that teaching the safe use of heavy machinery includes a strong approach to forming a safety culture at their workplace so that the operator goes home safe every day.
