Slinging and Communication Refresher

The course is for those students who are required to refresh their knowledge of crane operation hazards and control; planning to rig and sling loads; preparing and slinging regular loads and communicate during crane operations.

Certification

Upon successful completion of this course students will be issued with a certificate.

Course Content

The course focuses on:

  • Risk and hazard controls.
  • Regular loads and irregular loads.
  • Pre lift planning.
  • Lifting equipment rating charts.
  • Factors of safety for slings.
  • Crane communications and signals.
  • Inspections of slings.
  • Preparing and slinging regular loads and safely directing a crane during crane operations.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify load and sling factors.
  • Identify key checks for pre-use inspections
  • Identify common crane operation hazards and describe control actions
  • Describe factor of safety and identify sling factors.
  • Identify a range of hand signals.
  • Carry out crane lift and movements safely.

Course structure

A combination of theoretical and practical assessment, discussions/recapping on knowledge already attained.

Prerequisites

Student must already hold Unit Standard 3789 or a documented equivalent that is deemed acceptable by Wood Training.

Assessment process

Theory assessment followed by practical assessment which takes place when student is ready/has shown that they can perform all tasks required. Assessment involves an observed lift and crane movements using hand signals or radio.

Items to bring

  • Photo ID.
  • Correct PPE for practical component (e.g. hard hat, overalls, gloves, steel cap shoes, Hi-Viz, ear protection).
  • Wear comfortable clothing suitable for classroom situation.

There isn’t much that Bob can’t drive or operate.  Bob is a MITO, and Connexis registered assessor, a Competenz registered Forklift Trainer and an NZTA approved assessor.  Bob started his career as a Driver/Operator within the Transport and Building Industries and has spent the last 20 years training people on safe driving and operating equipment.  He believes in giving the right information to the candidate so that they can make the right decisions out there in the workplace, that teaching the safe use of heavy machinery includes a strong approach to forming a safety culture at their workplace so that the operator goes home safe every day.
