Basic Pre Hospital Emergency Care – Refresher

This course provides students with an update on incident scene management and patient assessments; the use of medical oxygen and associated equipment; and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) use.

Certification

A Basic Pre Hospital Emergency Care Refresher certificate will be issued on successful completion of this course.

Course Content

The course focuses on:

  • Primary assessment.
  • Chain of survival.
  • Secondary assessment.
  • Gathering patient history.
  • AED.
  • Stress.
  • OPA and Oxygen.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Provide PHEC response for a range of scenarios when a casualty is both conscious and unconscious.
  • Monitor the blood glucose and blood pressure of a casualty.
  • Measure and insert a OPA to maintain a patent airway for a casualty.
  • Provide enhanced basic life support.
  • Clear and maintain a clear and open airway for a casualty.

Course structure

The course is a combination of theoretical and practical sessions. Students are assessed continuously during the course.

Prerequisites

A current First Aid certificate with NZQA US 6400 or US 23046 that is no older than two years and three months, or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills that are acceptable to Wood Training.

Assessment process

Theory assessment followed by practical assessment (including verbal questioning) which takes place when the student is ready/has shown that they can perform all tasks required.

Assessment will involve:

  • Simulated emergency situations which may include heart attack, drowning, smoke inhalation, electrocution, natural disaster or motor vehicle accident for a conscious and unconscious casualty.
  • Skills stations: casualty monitoring, using a OPA, provision of enhanced basic life support, maintaining clear and open airways.

Revalidation/Refresher

To maintain current competency, it is recommended that refresher training occurs regularly. Depending on the industry you work in this may vary. Current Wood Training recommendation is every two years.

  • Photo ID.
  • Comfortable clothing suitable for participating in practical exercises.
  • Appropriate streetwear can be worn.
