First Aid for Young Children

Course Content

The course focuses on:

• Mechanism of injury.
• Level of consciousness and responsiveness.
• Initial assessment.
• Stable side position: infant, child.
• Infant CPR (newborn- 1 year).
• Child CPR (1-8 years).
• Airway obstruction: infant, child.
• Bleeding.
• Asthma.
• Anaphylaxis.
• Seizures.
• Poisoning.
• Burns: cool, remove, cover.
• Croup.
• Bacterial infection of epiglottis.
• Meningitis.
• Measles.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

• Provide first aid for young children.
• Identify hazards and signs and symptoms of trauma and medical conditions.

Course structure

The course is a combination of theoretical and practical sessions. Students are assessed continuously during the course.

Course prerequisites

None.

Assessment process

Theoretical assessment followed by practical assessment which takes place when the student is ready/has shown that they can perform all tasks required. The assessment will involve a first aid scenario for a child and an infant including safety and scene assessment, and resuscitation techniques.

Revalidation/Refresher

To maintain current competency, it is recommended that refresher training occurs regularly. Depending on the industry you work in this may vary. Current Wood Training recommendation is every two years.

• Comfortable clothing suitable for participating in practical exercises.
• Covered-in footwear.
