This course provide students with the basic knowledge and skills required to work at height.

Certification

A Heights Safety Certificate will be issued on successful completion of this course.

Course Content

The course focuses on:

  • Legislation requirements.
  • Hazard identification.
  • Equipment (including harness and lanyard inspection logs).
  • Rescue plans.
  • Risks and controls.
  • Practical scenario activity.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the hazards associated with wearing a safety harness and associated equipment.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of safety harnesses and associated systems and equipment.
  • Check and fit a safety harness system.
  • Use a safety harness system where a fall hazard exists at height.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the rescue plan to be implemented in the event of a fall.
  • Identify the common types of height safety equipment employed on height work in the workplace.
  • Identify suitable height work equipment.
  • Identify suitable anchor points for fall and arrest systems.
  • Employ height safety equipment in a workplace environment.
  • Plan rescue techniques and emergency procedures for working at height in the workplace.

Optional unit available online US17600:

  • explain the legislative requirements associated with working at heights and the systems suitable for working at heights.

Course structure

The course is a combination of theoretical and practical sessions. Students are assessed continuously during the course.

Course prerequisites

None.

Assessment process

Theory assessment followed by practical assessment which takes place when student is ready/has shown that they can perform all tasks required. The practical consists of a given scenario at height and requires the completion of hazard identification, pre use safety inspections, identification selection of all necessary equipment.

Revalidation/Refresher

To maintain current competency, it is recommended that refresher training occurs regularly. Depending on the industry you work in this may vary. Current Wood Training recommendation is every two years.

  • Photo ID.
  • Comfortable clothing suitable for participating in practical exercises.
  • Covered-in footwear.

Health

Must be physically capable of climbing at height.

Steve’s background includes serving with the Royal Marines Commando, a teacher of Art and Design, Fire Fighter (NZFS), Ship Security Officer maintaining security. His personal passion lies with mountaineering and climbing, bringing valuable rope skills and rescue to the Industrial rope access industry. Steve has a strong understanding of teams working under high pressure in high hazard and high stress environments. He holds a postgraduate Certificate in Education as well as qualifications in Training, Assessment, Rope Access and Occupation and Health and Safety.

There isn’t much that Bob can’t drive or operate.  Bob is a MITO, and Connexis registered assessor, a Competenz registered Forklift Trainer and an NZTA approved assessor.  Bob started his career as a Driver/Operator within the Transport and Building Industries and has spent the last 20 years training people on safe driving and operating equipment.  He believes in giving the right information to the candidate so that they can make the right decisions out there in the workplace, that teaching the safe use of heavy machinery includes a strong approach to forming a safety culture at their workplace so that the operator goes home safe every day.
