Working with Hazardous Substances Competent Person (Digital Delivery)

This course provides students with the knowledge to be a competent person in the safe handling, storage, and disposal of workplace hazardous substances as well as an understanding of the potential adverse effects these substances pose to people, property and the environment.

Certification

After successful completion of the online course you will be issued with an electronic badge. Before we can issue you with a formal Hazardous Substance Competent Person certificate you will be asked to contact Wood Training with proof of identity.

Course Content

The course focuses on:

  • Knowledge of hazardous substances including legislation requirements.
  • Properties and effects of hazardous substances.
  • Technical vocabulary.
  • Interpreting product specific information.
  • Documentation for hazardous substances including inventories and safety data sheets.
  • Storage, separation, segregation, tracking, handling and disposal.
  • Emergency management and preparation.
  • Understanding potential adverse effects of hazardous substances to people and the environment.
  • Spill response.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of classifying hazardous substances.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the potential adverse effects of hazardous substances substances on the body and environment, types of exposure monitoring, and treatment options.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of safe storage, tracking requirements, handling, and disposal of hazardous substances.
  • Describe response to uncontrolled release of hazardous substances

Course structure

US31290 is delivered online and includes topics that you work through at your own pace before you undertake the formal assessment.
After you contact Wood Training or book the course, we will send you a confirmation email with a link to the course and a self-enrolment key/access link. You will be prompted in the system to set up a profile with information that we need for your enrolment.

You will need to have:

  • Access to a computer and stable internet
  • An email address.

Course prerequisites

US31293 Demonstrate safe handling, storage and disposal of hazardous substances; and US497 Demonstrate knowledge of workplace health and safety requirements or equivalent, are recommended before you do this course.

Assessment process

Theory assessment which takes place when the student is ready. This includes completion of a short online quiz and a written assessment.

Revalidation/Refresher

To maintain current competency, it is recommended that refresher training occurs regularly. Depending on the industry you work in this may vary. Current Wood Training recommendation is every two years.
