Further Offshore Emergency Training (FOET) with EBS

This course is designed to meet further offshore emergency training requirements for personnel working in the offshore oil and gas industry who will be supplied with a rebreather emergency breathing system (EBS) during offshore helicopter travel.

Certification

An OPITO approved FOET certificate will be awarded to students who successfully complete the theory and all practical components of the course. Results will be submitted to OPITO.

Course Content

The course focuses on:

  • Firefighting and self-rescue practice
  • Emergency first aid theory and practice
  • Helicopter safety and escape theory and practice

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate in a simulated environment, that they can use the safety equipment and follow procedures in preparing for and during helicopter emergencies – with particular focus on escaping from a helicopter following ditching.
  • Demonstrate that they can use basic firefighting equipment effectively, and use self rescue techniques in low visibility and completely obscured visibility situations e.g. smoke filled areas.
  • Demonstrate that they can perform basic first aid.

Course structure

The course is a combination of theoretical and practical sessions. Students are assessed continuously during the course.

Course prerequisites

The FOET (with EBS) is open to those who have a valid (in-date) OPITO-approved BOSIET (with CA-EBS), BOSIET, TBOSIET, FOET (with CA-EBS), FOET or TFOET certificate.

If prior training done at another centre we must receive their current certificate so we can verify it in the OPITO Central Register.

Forward Dating

Refresher training (FOET with EBS) can be undertaken up to three months prior to the expiry date marked on your existing in-date valid BOSIET or FOET certificate.  This allows you to book in advance at a time to suit your schedule without losing any time. 

Medical requirements

Prior to undertaking the course we must be provided with a copy of one of the following:

  1. a) a Wood Training OPITO Medical Declaration and Screening form – with a sign off from a General Practitioner, OR
  2. b) a Wood Training OPITO Medical Declaration and Screening  form – with a current OGUK medical (for going offshore), OR
  3. c) a Wood Training OPITO Medical Declaration and Screening form – with an approved equivalent of an offshore medical (organisation specific).

Medicals to be received no later than 48 hrs before course commencement.

Assessment process

A multi choice assessment is undertaken after delivery of the first aid and helicopter theory components. Practical assessments takes place when the student is ready/has shown that they can perform all tasks required. If a student is deemed not competent, the process for reassessment will be advised by
the instructor.

Revalidation

Valid for 4 years. Must be renewed within 4 years prior to expiry date otherwise a full BOSIET is required.

  • Photo ID.
  • Comfortable clothing suitable for participating in practical exercises.
  • Swimming attire and towel.
  • Thermal top to wear under dry suit (optional).
  • Appropriate streetwear can be worn.
  • Personal toiletries (for shower).
  • Spare pair of socks.
  • Water bottle

Health

A current MEDICAL is MANDATORY prior to course commencement. All students who participate in this course which has physically demanding and potentially stressful elements must be physically and mentally capable of participating fully.

He has Emergency Care, Fire and Rescue qualifications as well as in the areas of Adult Education and Training. Ryan volunteers his time to work with St John Ambulance as an ambulance officer and as a senior fire fighter with Fire Emergency New Zealand. Ryan stands out as a well-rounded emergency response professional with experience across multiple areas.

Steve’s background includes serving with the Royal Marines Commando, a teacher of Art and Design, Fire Fighter (NZFS), Ship Security Officer maintaining security. His personal passion lies with mountaineering and climbing, bringing valuable rope skills and rescue to the Industrial rope access industry. Steve has a strong understanding of teams working under high pressure in high hazard and high stress environments. He holds a postgraduate Certificate in Education as well as qualifications in Training, Assessment, Rope Access and Occupation and Health and Safety.
