Wear and Operate a Compressed Air Breathing Apparatus (CABA) in the Workplace Refresher

This course provides students with an update on current best practice and opportunity to demonstrate continued competency in wearing and operating a compressed air breathing apparatus.

Certification

A Compressed Air Breathing Apparatus Refresher certificate will be issued on successful completion of this course.

Course Content

The course focuses on:

  • Key theoretical elements refreshed.
  • Commissioning a CABA set.
  • Donning and starting up.
  • High and low pressuring testing.
  • Hearing CABA in actual or practical simulated conditions
  • Managing CABA for safe use and survivability.
  • Shutting down, doffing and re-commissioning a CABA.
  • Acting as a Entry Control Officer.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Wear a CABA set safely in an irrespirable atmosphere having commissioned, donned, started up and conducted required pressure testing.
  • Correctly shut down, doff and recommission a CABA set.
  • Undertake the required tasks of a Entry Control Officer including tally board monitoring, PPE checks, maintaining communications

Course structure

The course is a combination of theoretical and practical sessions. Students are practically assessed continuously during the course.

Prerequisites

Participants are required to sign a declaration that they are in good health (have no medical, physical or psychological conditions that would affect their ability to succeed in this training) OR provide a current (less than six months old) medical certificate. Wood Training reserve the right to stop training for health and safety purposes, e.g. failure to secure a facial seal. NZQA US 25044 or a documented equivalent that is deemed acceptable by Wood Training.

Assessment process

Theory assessment followed by practical assessment which takes place when the student is ready/has shown that they can perform all tasks required. The assessment will involve the preparation and use of SCBA.

  • Photo ID.
  • Comfortable clothing suitable for wearing under Fire
  • Fighting attire.
  • Socks.
  • Covered in footwear.
  • Water bottle.
  • Change of clothes and towel for available shower.

Steve has a strong understanding of teams working under high pressure in high hazard and high stress environments. He holds a postgraduate Certificate in Education as well as qualifications in Training, Assessment, Rope Access and Occupation and Health and Safety.
