Heights Safety – Advanced

This course is ideal training for people who work at heights using temporary proprietary height safety systems or with a potential to fall especially those working in the construction and infrastructure sector.

A Heights Safety - Advanced Certificate will be issued on successful completion of this course.

Course Content

The course focuses on:

  • hazards of height work and associated equipment.
  • manufacturer’s specifications.
  • equipment checks.
  • preparation for proprietary fall arrest installation with rescue plans.
  • anchor points selection, loading, checking/improvised and constructed anchors.
  • installation, use of and disestablishment of various fall arrest systems (vertical and horizontal).

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • identify anchor points and prepare to install a temporary proprietary height safety system.
  • install horizontal and vertical temporary proprietary height safety systems.
  • use temporary proprietary height safety systems.
  • disestablish temporary proprietary height safety systems.

Course structure

The course is a combination of theoretical and practical sessions. Students are assessed continuously during the course.

 

Prerequisites

US23229 Use safety harness system when working at height.

Experience required before assessment:

Waihanga Ara Rau Workforce Development Council is the standard setting body for US15757. They have identified that students should be able to demonstrate they have appropriate industry experience undertaking basic work while working at heights before being assessed for 15757.

An attestation is available from Wood Training for employers to substantiate that the student is experienced and deemed ready for assessment.

 

Assessment process

Theory assessment followed by practical assessment which takes place when student is ready/has shown that they can perform all tasks required and have submitted an acceptable attestation.

The practical consists of the installation, use and removal of temporary proprietary height safety systems at a minimum height of two metres.

 

Revalidation/Refresher

To maintain current competency, it is recommended that refresher training occurs regularly.  Depending on the industry you work in this may vary.  Current Wood Training recommendation is every two years.

  • Photo ID.
  • Comfortable clothing suitable for classroom.
  • Covered-in footwear.

Health

Must be physically capable of climbing at height.
