Asbestos Removal Class A (Friable)

This course provides students with practical knowledge and techniques for the removal of Class A friable asbestos and asbestos-containing materials; and includes preparing, enclosing and removing friable asbestos materials.

Certification

An Asbestos Class A certificate will be issued on successful completion of all components of this course. Note: To become a licensed Asbestos Removalist an application to WorkSafe NZ is required.

Course Content

The course focuses on:

  • Identification and asbestos management plans.
  • Asbestos Removal Control Plan (ARCP).
  • Licensed removal work.
  • Health monitoring/PPE/RPE.
  • Asbestos removal, collecting, disposal and clearance.
  • Enclosure building and removal of simulated ACM and conducting ACM related work.
  • Construction of a three-stage decontamination unit.
  • Setup, attachment and use of a negative pressure unit including smoke test.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Prepare for friable asbestos removal.
  • Prepare asbestos removal area and removal site.
  • Isolate a removal site.
  • Carry out friable asbestos removal process.
  • Carry out decontamination process.
  • Clean up a work site.
  • Contribute to and use documentation in line with NZ regulatory requirements.

Course structure

The theory part of this course is conducted in a classroom environment.

Course prerequisites

Students must hold Site Safe (NZ) or other health and safety induction certification recognised in New Zealand; or equivalent knowledge.

Assessment process

To obtain the unit standard for the removal of friable asbestos (CLASS A) a student must pass the written assessment in order to be eligible to engage in the practical assessment task. If practical assessments were not completed during the course (either in the workplace or a simulated workplace on day two) for whatever reason, an onsite workplace assessment will be scheduled with the student.

Revalidation/Refresher

To maintain current competency, it is recommended that refresher training occurs regularly. Depending on the industry you work in this may vary.
