Helicopter Deck Assistant (HDA)

This course provides students with the knowledge and skills to function effectively and safely as a Helicopter Deck Assistant (HDA) at installations in accordance with current industry standards.


A Helicopter Deck Assistant certificate will be issued on successful completion of the course.

Course Content

The course focuses on:

  • Roles and responsibilities of an HDA.
  • Assisting Helicopter Landing Officer (HLO) with required tasks to be completed prior to a helicopter landing/ disembarking/loading/take off.
  • Understanding helideck operations and safety requirements/procedures (as per ICAO standards).
  • Basic understanding of what information HLO provides helicopter pilot.
  • Conducting movements of passengers, baggage and cargo to/from helicopter.
  • Familiarity with helicopter types, their operation and emergency procedures.
  • Communication with HLO and pilots.
  • Familiarity with management of dangerous goods.
  • Familiarity with fire protection that is provided for take-off and landing.
  • Shutdown and security of aircraft on helideck.
  • Assisting HLO in ensuring platform meets safety requirements for helicopter operations (i.e. crane secured).

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify equipment required for routine and emergency helicopter operations.
  • Identify potential hazards of helicopter operations, its consequences and recommended controls.
  • Identify potential risks associated with goods and not securing baggage.
  • Identify actions passengers take during in-flight emergencies and on impact.
  • Identify helideck requirements including markings, equipment, authorities and team members.

Course structure

The course is theory based; a written assessment is undertaken once the student has demonstrated the ability to complete all tasks required. Students are assessed continuously during the course.

Course prerequisites



To maintain current competency, it is recommended that refresher training occurs regularly. Depending on the industry you work in this may vary. Current Wood Training recommendation is every two years.
