Helicopter Landing Officer (HLO) ONLINE

To provide students with the knowledge and skills to function effectively and safely as a Helicopter Landing Officer (HLO) at installations in accordance with current industry standards.

Certification

After successful completion of the online learning and the formative assessment you will be issued with an electronic badge and be eligible to receive a Helideck Assistant certificate. To successfully pass the course and be awarded a HLO certificate you must all successfully complete an On Job Assignment. Before we can issue you with a formal certificate, you will need to contact Wood Training with proof of identity.

Course Content

The course focuses on:

  • Roles and responsibilities of an HLO.
  • Understanding helideck operations and safety requirements/procedures (as per ICAO standards).
  • Basic understanding of what information HLO provides helicopter pilot.
  • Movements of passengers, baggage and cargo to/from helicopter.
  • Familiarity with helicopter types, their operation and emergency procedures.
  • Communication with pilots and basic marshalling signs.
  • Familiarity with management of dangerous goods.
  • Familiarity with fire protection for take-off and landing.
  • Shutdown and security of aircraft on helideck.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of helicopter operation and safety equipment and procedures.
  • Assess helicopter hazards and their potential consequences.
  • Use and interpret documentation and maintain reports for helicopter landing operations.
  • Locate and explain emergency procedures and contingency plans for helicopter landings.

Course structure

The course is theoretical with a post course on job assignment practical component.

Course prerequisites

None.

Assessment process

Theory assessment which takes place when the student is ready. A post course on job assessment component is required to be completed offshore and includes the HLO performing a range of tasks before and during multiple helicopter landings. In addition a supervising HLO must complete and attestation attesting to the students competency in the role. This is to be countersigned by a PIC/OIM/Captain.

Revalidation/Refresher

To maintain current competency, it is recommended that refresher training occurs regularly. Depending on the industry you work in this may vary. Current Wood Training recommendation is every three years.
