Hazardous Substances Awareness
This course provides students who would benefit from an awareness of associated adverse effects of hazardous substances that may be on the site that they work, even if they do not directly use or handle hazardous substances.
For those that do use or handle hazardous substances this is the first step in training to become a person competent in the management and safe handling of hazardous substances.
Certification
A Hazardous Substances Awareness certificate will be issued on successful completion of this course.Unit Standard: 31292 L3 C2 V1
Course Content
The course focuses on:
- Hazardous substances common to your workplace.
- Adverse effects to people and the environment.
- Safety data sheet information, labels and signage.
- Workplace procedures to prevent adverse effects.
- Workplace controls.
- Emergency procedures and response information.
- Workplace procedures for unlabelled and unmarked containers.
- Identify appropriate workplace personnel for decision-making and action.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of hazardous substances in a workplace and their potential adverse effects.
- Demonstrate knowledge of a workplace’s procedures to prevent adverse effects of hazardous substances.
Course structure
The course is conducted in a classroom environment and is theory based.
Course prerequisites
Recommended to have NZQA US 497 or Taranaki Passport Plus.
Assessment process
Theory assessment which takes place when the student is ready.
Revalidation/Refresher
To maintain current competency, it is recommended that refresher training occurs regularly. Depending on the industry you work in this may vary.

Coming off the tools from the Fluid Transfer Industry where he headed the engineering department, Jack has worked across Australia and New Zealand honing his skills and knowledge. With a change in career, his passion for health and safety has become his focus, and he consults all over the country, particularly around Hazardous Substance compliance, permit to work systems, and safe work practices. Jack holds both a New Zealand Diploma and NEBOSH International qualifications in Occupational Health and Safety as well as Adult Education and Training.
