Training and Education versus Role Performance

There have been long discussions in the sector about the differences between training, education and performance in a given role.

Essentially, training is considered to be the process of learning something with a goal of proficiently performing a skill, or acquiring a particular behaviour; whereas education is often considered to be more about the development of knowledge and the process of acquiring it.  Many times the hope is that when training is done, proficiency and performance in a given role is guaranteed.

Of course, there is more to it. At Wood Training, we do a modern combination of training and education, that is, we believe people are more likely to make a difference in the workplace if we consider all three aspects:  attitude, skill and knowledge.  We try to provide more than just ticking the box for the Unit Standard.

It is a hard ask to add in elements of pure “education” into a training environment when the workforce requirements usually dictate competency and proficiency (to a standard), and where there are always significant limitations on the time available for training.  It is our belief however, that the more learners know, the more useful the training is to them, and the more likely they can make a difference in the workplace.

Through our workforce surveys we know that competency and performance for a specific role is more complicated than just attending a day or two of training, or just holding a Unit Standard.  Ongoing training, supervision and mentoring must continue into the workplace.  The learning needs to be consolidated with experience on the job, in the workplace.  We know that learners say training helps them with their confidence to do the job, but it is only one cog in the wheel that is on-going and competent performance.

For us, it is just about what works.  You tell us works, and what doesn’t.   That is why your feedback is always important to us.  No matter what research about training and education tells us, your word carries just as much if not more weight on how we design and deliver our courses.  So, keep talking to us.  We are listening.
